Before you buy anything

  1. Ask the doctor whether the item is medically necessary and whether they will write an order.
  2. Check that the supplier is enrolled in Medicare and accepts assignment.
  3. If your parent has Medicare Advantage, read the Evidence of Coverage or call member services before buying.
  4. Keep receipts. Some plans reimburse allowances, and some items may count toward tax deductions.

For items not on the list, see our full Medicare coverage guide. Last checked October 2026. Sources: Medicare.gov, CMS, NCOA and AARP, as cited on the linked pages.

Common questions

Is this checker a coverage decision?

No. It summarizes what Medicare.gov, CMS, NCOA and AARP say, as already cited in our guides. Coverage depends on your parent's plan, the supplier and a doctor's order, so confirm with Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE or with the plan.

Why do so many items say no for Original Medicare?

Original Medicare Part B pays for durable medical equipment used for a medical reason, in the home, ordered by a doctor and supplied by an enrolled supplier. Items it treats as home modifications or comfort and convenience, such as stairlifts, walk-in tubs and grab bars, generally fall outside that.

Where do Medicare Advantage plans fit in?

Advantage plans must cover what Original Medicare covers, and some add extras such as allowances for bathroom safety items or medical alert systems. Check your parent's Evidence of Coverage and Annual Notice of Change, or ask member services.
